More about this scene
Horbury lies at the heart of the West Yorkshire heavy woollen district. It was the birthplace of the architect John Carr, who started his training in his father's quarry. After a working life based in York, he returned to Horbury to build, at his own expense, the new church of St Peter and St Leonard in 1794. He was later buried here in the vault of the church; the entrance was sealed up in 1884, only to be rediscovered in 1950.
