There has been a watermill at Houghton since 974. Mills were frequently rebuilt, and this mill replaces one that was burnt down in the 17th century. The three huge water wheels drove the three pairs of grinding stones, and when the mill was working the steady rumble of the mill machinery would have been a familiar sound. There are two footbridges beside the mill leading to the water meadows. A man is rowing across the millrace.

I believe the Mini Van parked by the clock tower belonged to my auntie, Masie Hockaday, who owned the Thicket Cottage Riding Stables in Houghton. She bought one of the first Minis off the production line. It was pale green and used to attract attention where ever it went. I remember going to Wicksteed Park in it when I was about 10.
