The Ayling House

A Memory of Houghton.

I know this house is where my great-great-grandfather Harvey Ayling was born (in 1834). The Aylings were in this house for many generations. I have a picture of this same house from the late 1800s with 2 horse wagons parked out front. Still, even today, the same house has the same Ayling family decendents living there.
I even have a record of my g-g-g-g-grandpa John Ayling being a resident in Houghton dated from 1778. It could go back even more years than that.

I also have a photo of this house from circa 1930 showing my father as a young man together with other relatives. My great-great-grandfather was William Ayling born 1826 who is Harvey Ayling's elder brother.

Old post to comment upon, but maybe someone will come across in future. See aylinghistory.net if interested in this family. YDNA testing tells us the the Aylings of Houghton originate in Stedham, likely on a descendant line from John Aylyng (D. 1546) of Terwick. John being the son of John Aylyng (D. 1511) of Bramshott, Hants, likely the person recorded as the Reeve of Droxford Manor in the late 1400s. Our shared ancestor was Thomas Aylyng, born about 1350 (recorded in the 1381 Poll Tax for Easebourne). He and his father William were likely millers there. Descendants of Thomas settled in Stedham and Tillington mainly (I am of the latter branch). They were the grandson and great grandson of Rico Aelyng, recorded in the Sussex Subsidy for Heyshott in 1296AD. His ancestor is probably among the 300 or so unnamed residents of Hayling Island (our surname is derived from here), recorded in the Domesday Book, relatively recently arrival to England from the Jutland/northern Germany area area.
