A Memory of Hounslow.

I remember going to the shops in Hounslow High street with my mum and dad. The ABC cafe which had rows of perspex boxes with different cakes and sandwiches in each one. MacFisheries, and a department store which I think was called Edmunds - used to have a Father Xmas Grotto there in December.

Inwood park in the summer, the boating lake, paddling pool, tennis courts, and they had a games shed which was opened at certain times and had stilts etc that you could have a go on. Also Redlees Park which had a pitch and putt course and was just behind Isleworth Swimming Baths where I used to go, followed by oxtail soup.

Lived in Catherine Gardens - went to Chatsworth Junior school, then Spring Grove Grammar (Lampton). Used to call into Rossi's for an ice cream on the way home or get some fruit from the large fruit and veg stall in Bell Road.

Oh wow I remember Rossi's! The best ice cream in the world. It seemed so exciting at the time to walk slowly past, was it a cafe as well? Next door was a shoe shop and I remember looking in the window longingly at the ladies shoes & wishing my feet to grow so I could save up fir some.
I remember Macfisheries too although I'd not given it a thought since 1963 when left for a life in Suffolk (what a come down after a London life, constant buses, the Tube & street lights everywhere.ive got a post on here, I was looking for it when I stumbled across yours.
I don't remember ABC or Edmunds but my older sister Jennifer might. She and I went back a couple of years ago to retrace our walk to Alexandra School. It's gone of course, along with Hounslow Baths. In place of the school was a very modern Asda, a huge white building resembling an ocean liner.
We used to go to Isleworth Baths too & also Twickenham Baths in the days when kids could hop on buses on their own.
I don't remember Inwood Park but I do recall Osterly Park, Hounslow Heath and Lampton Park. We lived on Bulstrode Avenue at the Hounslow Central Tube end.
We went to Alexandra infants & junior, Jennifer went to Marlborough Girls in Isleworth (it's still there). I went to Woodfield (I chose it because it was near Heathrow, I'd always dreamed of escaping to exciting countries (which came true) and younger sis Wendy went to Bulstrode Senior. Our younger half brothers were Chris & Billy Sturgeon.
I thought the department Store was called Murfitts. My mum worked there, on the fabrics. She was a seamstress & dressmaker.
I'd love to find Sheila Maybe for sis Jenny. Sheila and her mum lived above the tobacconist opposite Hounslow Central.
Moira Bellas was my friend at Woodfield Senior.
Kind regards, fond memories Penelope - Penny Aylett as was!
The Rossi ice cream was fabulous.
The department store was called Edmonds and I loved it in there because they used to put the money and the bill into a sort of wire basket and then it went on an overhead system to the cash desk and the change came back the same way. I grew up near Lampton Park and started at Wellington Primary
yes I went to wellington juniors too then on to Bulstrode girls school loved Rossi my name then was Sheila English
Woodfield school such happy happy memories. Do you remember Flop Duggan
Champion pole vaulter. County champion I seem to think. Mr Wilkinson loved him! Flop was blue eye and handsome, I expect that why us girls liked to watch him practise. We sat out the TD room. Such a shame they knock the school down. Should have had listed status we thought.
Murfitts store was the bus garage end of the high street, Edmunds was half way along the high street, at he Bell end was Trebles which sold fabrics, sewing and knitting items. I loved going in there as the money was put in a small container which whizzed around the ceiling up to a cashier who then sent the change back. Very amusing to us kids.
I used to live next door to Phil (flop) Duggan in Arundel Rd Hounslow West in the late 50's. I worked as sweeper up in a men's barbers where Phil worked. He was a local hero for me as a young boy, as you say he was a champion pole - vaulter at Woodfield School. His mum and dad used to take us to the seaside once a year, a memory I will never forget....what I would do to meet up and say than you to them but sadly far too late. RIP Phil.
Thank you everyone, you've scratched an itch! I found this site by accident whilst trying to recall the name of the cafe at the top of Lampton Road - ABC of course. My sister and I lived just off Cranford Lane in Harlington, and we used to go in the ABC if we had time, whenever we were passing through and had to change buses at the bus garage and had a bit of pocket money left. They did 'milk with a dash' (of coffee), and halfpenny buns. But there have been many mentions of Rossi's ice cream- I hold them solely responsible for my life-long passion for ice cream, always searching for that elusive Rossi's flavour and texture! I suspect it was some sort of gelato, and sadly I haven't quite found it yet. That was a rare treat, sometimes allowed after Saturday morning dancing lessons at Longley's School of Dancing up Lampton Road in the early 60's. When we were very small and excitedly had a trip by bus with our mother to The Bell, she would ask the conductor for "One and two halves", which came to tuppence! Of course, inflation being what it is, by the time we were going to Longley's on our own, we had to pay sixpence each (old money).
