Hanworth Terrace Or Bell Alley As Locals Called It And Bell Road

A Memory of Hounslow.

I remember the walkway between Whitton Road and Hanworth road which ended opposite Bell Road. There was a greengrocer stall about halfway along the alley, i was often sent up to get some veg with my mums string bag lined with a sheet of newspaper to put potatoes in. He was a nice chap, slightly disabled, i remember he had a special raised shoe. At the Bell Road end was a florist. Opposite was a bakers. There was a toy shop in Bell Road that had a wonderful display of plastic animals, cowboys and indians also soldiers. Further along was the Methodist church which had a hall with a youth club and was where i met my husband.

I remember it used to be said in the sixties that Hounslow had the most shoe shops. Indeed we used to get the underground from Boston Manor to Hounslow East to visit the shops. C&A. Brentford Nylons. Edmunds. Boots etc. I remember by Hounslw East station there was a shop that sold stylus for our record players. Now Hounslow is the worst West London Borough for flytipping. How sad! A Saturday morning statement could be LETS GO TO HOUNSLOW TODAY! There was even a Green Shield Stamp showrooms near the bus garage. Yes Hounslow was the place.
Yes Hounslow was an ex cellent shopping centre, as you say lots of shoe shops. In fact my friend and i would go up to London to shop and end up coming back to Hounslow to buy what we wanted.
What happened to Brentford Nylons? They were big, they built a big multi storey office on the Gt West Rd. A DJ called fluff used to advertise for them. He also advertised a washing powder, may have been OMO. C & A was good always got a shirt or a pair of trousers when I went in. There must be loads of shops that I have forgotten about. Isleworth trolley bus depot was very important. I recently saw a u tube. Inside there were little turntables so the buses could be parked so as to get very many in. The ricky tick opposite the bus station was where a certain young singer called Eric Burden and the Amimals played early on.
They collapsed when people got fed up with nylon sheets!
I used to love going to the big co op store on stained rd opposite the bowling arcade
