More about this scene
A little down-river from the city of Oxford is Iffley, with its mill lock and bridge. The water mill here dates back as far as the 11th century, and survived for almost 800 years. This picturesque scene was a favourite with painters and photographers in Victorian times. It was also the haunt of fishermen, and built into the lock gates were eel traps. A ferry carried visitors over the river.
