More about this scene
A monument to Queen Victoria stands in the park in front of the 16th-century Christchurch Mansion. Its very Dutch-looking curved and pedimented gables came when the house was rebuilt after fire destroyed the upper storey in 1674. When Daniel Defoe visited Ipswich in 1722, he commented on how many townsfolk used the park, likening its popularity to that of Kensington Gardens.
