Gagie

A Memory of Kellas.

This was my grandmothers house and i spent many school holidays here with my uncle and aunt and their 3 sons who lived with my grandmother. Long summer days were spent "going down the den" the wooded area next to the walled garden. We played croquet on the lawn and tennis on the grass court and generally ran wild freely on the estate. Sadly my aunt the Hon..Jane Hendry died last year well into her nineties, she spent her last years in North Berwick after having moved from Angus,I think Kerbet House after the death of my uncle Gilbert Hendry. We were in regular contact during her final years and enjoyed reminiscessing about life at Gagie in the 50's. Her 3 sons still live in Scotland but unfortunately will have no contact with me. I have clear memories of the interior of the house and can recall all the rooms and who slept where. Afternoon tea was often brought out to the wooden seat which is in front of the drawing room, a much under used room only opened up for entertaining and on Christmas Day. The inside of the house was dark and cold in winter but we always had a log fire in the sitting room and hot water bottles to take to bed. The servants quarters were still in use in the early 50's and I remember there was always a resident cook and local domestic help. My grandmother died in the early 60's aged 97 and the house was then sold and underwent the much needed renovation by the Smoor family.
