More about this scene

South-east of the town, along the valley of the River Ise and west of Barton Seagrave village, is The Wicksteed Park with the river dammed to form a large lake as the centrepiece. Around it is a large amusement park, started in the 1930s and still going strong today. The many entertainments include a fairground, boating lake and aviaries. This view shows the boat station by the 1936 hump-backed bridge. Nowadays there is also an elevated monorail. All the buildings, including the distant flat-roofed chalets, survive today.

I spent many a happy hour in this, then very new, building in the early 60's., ostensibly studying for GCE's. But much to my everlasting regret, failing to take anything seriously, and with scant regard for the future, despite the best efforts of "Mac" McKinley and his excellent teaching staff. Bell And Billows
During the mid-sixties I worked for Bell and Billows, the ironmongers in the left of the picture. A large part of their business was horticultural equipment, and many spring and summer evenings were spent demonstrating mowers and cultivators to prospective purchasers. Montagu St 1962/3
In the early 60's I worked at the far end of Montagu St, in the Ironmongers of Tutty Ltd, when their business and premises were bought by the Kettering Industrial Co-operative Society. Eventually it closed and the remaining stock sold to Newmans Ironmongers, to the right of the car in the picture. For many years the showroom on the right was known as Cleavers.

History Of Market Street Kettering
Can anyone remember the name of the shop on the corner of market St which is now Barclays Bank. It was a haberdashery shop. I remember going in there with my nan and aunt in the 60's. Thanks.

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
