More about this scene

The shops on the left replaced a gabled, timber-framed pub, the White Swan, which was demolished in the mid 20th century, probably soon after World War II. It was a popular meeting place, with a bowling green and a quoits club. Its close neighbour, The Red Lion, is just visible on the left of this scene.
