Lancaster, View From Castle 1927

More about this scene
We are looking over Lancaster and the outer parts of the castle from the higher inner ramparts. This large, square Norman keep with its 10ft- thick walls was restored on orders from Queen Elizabeth I. We can see the round tower added by King John, and the back of the famous John of Gaunt Gateway; the Ashton Memorial, looking like St Paul's in London, stands out from the murk of Lancaster behind. Part of the courtyard below was used to bury victims who were hung publicly outside the castle walls.
