Launceston, The Square c.1949

More about this scene
The disappearance of the horse is marked in these pictures, probably taken on a Tuesday — by now, Tuesday had become Market Day. Several businesses have changed, too: Fitze's Ironmonger's (today Boots) occupies the premises that in 1921 were Wenmouth's Ironmongers, and Stephen's Outfitters has been taken over by the Midland Bank. Chaplins, owners of the lorry outside the Joy Shop in picture L20007, carried goods not only for the Southern Railway but also for the Great Western, in whose premises they had their depot.
