More about this scene
The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley rowed to Lechlade from Windsor with his friends Mary Godwin, Thomas Love Peacock and Charles Clairmont in 1815. The visit inspired him to write Stanzas in a Summer Evening Churchyard. As this photograph reminds us, by the mid 1950s private cars and public buses opened the pleasures of Lechlade to a wider audience.
