Leicester, Gallowtree Gate c.1950

More about this scene
Gallowtree Gate runs out of Granby Street and London Road as it drops down to the Clock Tower. Its derivation is probably literal, in that it may well refer to the gallows which were sited at the top of London Road hill, close to its junction with Evington Lane. Like much of Leicester, the photograph shows an intelligent use of the classical vocabulary without excitement or grandeur. In the 15th century, Gallowtree Gate and Church Gate ran parallel with the east wall of the town and the town ditch.
