More about this scene

The Grand Union Canal (more properly called the Grand Junction) was intended to be the central artery of a web of smaller canals linking London with Birmingham, the Potteries and the East Midlands. An Act of Parliament of 1793 authorised the building of the route at an estimated cost of £600,000, but it was 1805 before it was finally and fully opened with the completion of the Blisworth Tunnel. Travellers planning a full trip today should allow at least seven days to complete the 135 miles and 160 locks.
