Leybourne Grange Grange Close Staff Houses

A Memory of Leybourne.

I also lived in Leybourne, no8 Grange Close which were the staff houses for the local asylum Leybourne Grange. We moved there in the 1950s when the house were first built for the staff. My father was Jack Wincott and we lived next door to the Leggetts. Sylvia was my best friend. The close was a great safe community to live in as everyone knew each other and all worked at the hospital. As the hospital was way out in the country , West Malling being the nearest village where we did our shopping,. Us children had a great time playing in the local woods and taking bike rides into the local countryside. We were very popular when my father brought a tv for the queens coronation and everyone piled in to watch, however less popular when the Dimmocks bought an ITV box.
Part of the families christmas day was going around the hospital villas in wonder at the decorations put up with some of the patients.I also worked in the hospital laundry in my school holidays with some of the female patients some of whom had no family to visit and were eager to make friends. It wasnt all bad.
I have lost touch with everyone from those days as I married young and moved away so it would be nice if anyone reading this would get in touch, Christine Croud Wincott that was. chriscroud@gmail.com
