Little Comberton The Olde Thatched Cottage

A Memory of Little Comberton.

If this is the same house now known as Meadow Cottage in Little Comberton,, then I lived there as a very small child (about 2-3 years old) for a short time in 1955 or 1956. My father was in the RAF, stationed at Defford and he rented the Cottage for a short time before we moved on. I can remember my father going off over the back fence to play cricket for the village in the summer. We used to walk up the road towards a farm, where they had a horse and a donkey. Sadly, I don't have much in the way of photos, from that time, just one of my mother and me in the living room and one of my grandfather and me getting acquainted with a horse. I know that my parents were great friends with Eileen and Jack Quarrel, who lived around the corner near the village garage; they had 2 children - Alison and Michael. We all lost touch a very long time ago.

To the best of my knowledge this place is still known as 'The Old Thatch' and was owned by my father from about 1946 to about 1954 where he lived with his first wife Eileen and their two children Michael and Philippa.
My Grandparents Sidney and Louie Jones bought The Old Thatch in 1953. I spent a lot of my childhood at the Cottage and loved it. My Grandmother died in 1962. In 1970 the Cottage was severely damaged by a fire and was rebuilt but it lost all its uniqueness which was very sad. I knew Eileen and Jack Quarrel they bought the land behind The Old Thatch. They lived in a caravan whilst they built their house.
My Grandfather continued to live there until his death in December 1990 three months short of his 100th Birthday
