More about this scene
The White Star Line started in Liverpool when Thomas Henry Ismay bought a bankrupt shipping company in 1868. He put money, new ships and new life into the company, and brought in the right partners and associates to found the successful business. White Star, whose motto was 'Ready and Steadfast', always aimed at the best. The SS 'Adriatic', built in 1872, was the fifth of their liners. We see her here just after she had had Second Class accommodation fitted. Not a lucky ship, she collided with Cunard's 'Parthia' at New York in October 1875, and in December the same year she hit the sailing ship 'Harvest Queen', drowning all on board. Her speed and metal bows got her into trouble again in July 1885, when she sank the brigantine 'G A Pink' - five crew died. Laid up at Birkenhead in 1890, she was taken to Preston for breaking up in 1899.
