More about this scene
Don't be fooled into thinking that the name of this village suggests a bloodthirsty past. Some old guide-books claim that the name derives from the sloe (or blackthorn) tree, but it more likely comes from 'slough', meaning a muddy place. The River Eye flows through the village; there has been a mill here since before the Norman Conquest, though the present building with the tall chimney shown here dates from around 1800.
