More about this scene
Lowfield Heath is near the old London to Brighton main road. The White Lion Inn, left, also serves teas. The Stores, run by J F Mitchell, has the front door open awaiting customers. In the background is St Michael's church. Built in1867, it has a square tower and a pyramidal spire. The whole area is now very close to the greatly expanded and very busy Gatwick Airport, which was built in the 1960s partly on the site of the old Gatwick racecourse.
