More about this scene
Built on the site of an early Saxon church, the present St Mary's has elements dating back to the 12th century. Much of the exterior was remodelled in the 15th century to give the striking chequer pattern of flint and stone. The Crown held the living of St Mary's in the 14th century and the fact is commemorated in the baptistery that was presented to the church by Queen Phillippa, wife of Edward III.
