Further along the street, and almost a decade later, an early motor car is parked outside the entrance of the Royal Lion Hotel, which was rebuilt in blue lias ashlar after a devastating fire in 1844. In the distance the grey shape of the Isle of Portland, at the opposite end of Lyme Bay, rises from the sea.
