More about this scene
The churchyard contains the tomb of Caroline Bowles, the second wife of the poet Robert Southey. She lived virtually all her life in a nearby cottage, and was a poet in her own right. There are several memorials in the chancel, one of which is to Matthew Blakiston. It reads: 'To those who knew him the enumeration of his virtues would be superfluous. To those who knew him not it might be tedious'.
