More about this scene
Along with Mill Street and Jordangate, Chestergate was one of the first streets to be properly paved, and, more importantly, to be provided with surface drainage. Until 1825 there were no surface drains in Macclesfield and the only part of the town with a piped water supply was the area around the Market Place.
