More about this scene
The Town Hall was enlarged in 1869 at a cost of £15,200, and many locals considered the expense to be a waste of money; there were more important things to spend it on than councillors full of their own self importance. The work included a new council chamber, the old one being converted into committee rooms, and a new facade complete with Ionic columns.
