More about this scene
The 100-foot high slender stone tower of the church of St Peter and St Paul domi- nates this village built on a hairpin bend. Described by Pevsner as "the masterpiece among Dorset churches", it was rebuilt in 1857 by George Gilbert Scott, the son of the renowned Sir George Gilbert Scott. Its bell tower housed a carillon of 35 bells, cast at Louvain, and installed at a cost of more than £2,000. People would gather on the surrounding hills to listen to its peal.
