More about this scene
This photograph shows the great arch at the eastern end of the abbey. It formed part of the structure above which was built the lantern tower and spire. During a storm in the late 15th century the tower collapsed, causing a great deal of damage. Repairs to the ruined east end were undertaken, and the archway was closed up, which preserved the nave of the church.
