More about this scene
Just beyond R Arnold & Son's butcher's shop is a building that had been the village smithy. Ten years after this picture was taken, Ernest King, the Medstead blacksmith, died aged 70. He had moved to Medstead when a toddler, having been born in nearby Northington, and was captain of the local cricket team for many years.
