Metfield once had three pubs, The Red Lion, The Huntsman and Hounds and The Duke William, of which only this one survives. The present building dates from the 1950s; it replaced an earlier beer shop with one room and a serving place. This was run by Lib Riches and Charley Borley, who became the first tenants here. Since 1960 the porch has gone, and the room to the left has been extended to twice its length.

In 1940, we were evacuated to the village of Metfield, with my mother and brothers. A Mr and Mrs Godbold let us move into one of their cottages on the farm. On going to school, the local children would call us 'the Bomb Dodgers', but the shoe was soon on the other foot, as they built a USA airfield just outside the village, and we all soon saw action in the village.
