Middleham was the former capital of Wensleydale and a market town. As well as the weekly market there were annual fairs, and the close proximity of two abbeys must also have stimulated trade. Four miles southwest stood the great Cistercian abbey of Jervaulx, and two miles to the southwest was the Praemonstratensian abbey of Coverham.
