Living In Muswell Hill

A Memory of Muswell Hill.

I was born in Muswell Hill in 1960 and lived in Hampden Road. I went to Nursery and Primary School at Hollickwood School in Sydney Road. Spent many happy hours as I grew up sampling all the different ice cream flavours in Maude's Ice Cream parlour nearby! As kids, we would also dare each other to run through the Bus Garage without being seen and to try and sneak on a bus whilst it was being washed! I used to go to the library in Colney Hatch Lane, the Wimpy and Golden Egg in Muswell Hill Broadway - as a young adult the Minstrel Boy and Green Man pubs, also the Alexandra Arms in Cromwell Road. Often spent time in school holidays in Friary Park, Highgate Woods and Alexandra Palace. One of my first jobs was working at Ever Ready Batteries in Whetstone, I had to catch the 134 bus to get there. Also loved going to the Ritz cinema (where my Dad sometimes worked as a projectionist) and Saturday morning pictures at the Odeon (with compulsory FAB ice lolly!). All looks very different now!

I lived at 12 Hamden Road from 2002-2010. Lovely place. Which number did you live at?
Well well well! Nice to hear from you. Yes I went on to Finchley Manorhill after Hollickwood. Moved down to Surrey and now living in North Norfolk! I remember Susan Theobald - she had a blonde swishy ponytail! I stayed in contact with Sharon Gordon for quite a while but now lost touch. Also used to go to The Alexander Arms in Cromwell Road when I was 16/17 and used to see Brian Fletcher, Richard Green and Michael Wright there. Occasionally saw Gary Hills who was my first crush!!!
Me too - I remember all our class names from Hollickwood and I have a fab black and white school photo from our last year with Mrs Summer (teacher). I'm not sure if the turkish girl was janet Civale? She had a sister in the year below us called Phylllis and they lived in a big house at the top end of Sydney Road. I remember Haldane Close in the sixties well, I thing it was called Swing Park (or maybe that's just what I used to call it as there were swings there!). I very vaguely remember a small fair being there too. I did manage to keep in touch with a few people on Friends Reunited when that was going (Carol Fowler, Tina Cairns, Paul Morley) but again, now lost contact. Happy Memories!!
Hi Jennifer, stumbled across this post accidentally while reminiscing with the Ellen, Karen and Jenny Dear ..used to live below us on the corner of Oak Ave/ Alexandra Rd
