More about this scene

Built at the junction of two valleys, Nailsworth represents the transition between the old wool- based industry and more modern industries. As a consequence, most of the buildings here are less then two hundred years old. On the right, Davis the jeweller's and watchmaker's displays its wares, while on the opposite side of the street are advertising hoardings promoting a football match between Swindon and Port Vale and the Bath Horse Show.

A Selection of Memories from Nailsworth

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Nailsworth

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I spent most of my childhood in Newmarket, playing in the wood and on Bunting Hill shown in the photo with the old Quarry. Every year the hill would be set fire, the fire being lit at the top to burn slowly down, this was to encourage new grass to grow to feed goats that grazed there in the summer months.
