A Lifetime In North Harrow

A Memory of North Harrow.

Hi, I have lived here, despite a short time in South Harrow , all my life. I remember so many shops , long since, gone — Sam Lee, toys and sweets, Clark’s cycles ,Coopers hardware, WH Smith, Woolworths, Pembles, newspapers, and I think there was a Home and Colonial store for foods of all sorts . Besides the shops there was the Embassy cinema , where me and friends would go to the Saturday morning pictures ! Above what is now Rai ,the opticians was a coal merchants office , where we would order and pay for coal , to be delivered. I went to Pinner park school , where Mr White was the headmaster, then later to Headstone Sec Mod . I remember the air raid shelters at Pinner park ! My father worked at Kodak , and one of his best friends worked at H M stationery office next door to Kodak . My grandfather used to go to the North Harrow assembly rooms where OAPs could meet up and have a meal together. My greatest interest had always been in the Manor House at Headstone, whose future was always in the balance , but due mostly to lottery funding ( and not Harrow council’s indifference) has been turned into a wonderful museum of Harrow, and my dream of owning the house has become partly true as I’m a voluntary warden at the site
