Growing Up In Northwood Hills

A Memory of Northwood Hills.

Although our postal address was Woodford Crescent, Pinner; the Northwood Hills shops, some 20 minutes walk away, were the closest. I remember the lovely 'Swiss Chalet' bakers, Paterson's butchers next door, Prangley's bike shop, a Wimpy Bar, W.HSmith's, several sweet shops with many '4 for a penny ' sweets, the best one to me being round the corner by the cinema! I remember a card shop with a wonderful stationery section I would browse in for ages (opposite the station), also, the library, the cottage hospital (tonsils removed there apx 1958), the chip shop (6d for a bag of chips I think? ) the more I think of the place, the more I remember!
My first school was a, now closed, prep school in Pinner, I then went to West Lodge Juniors, again in Pinner and then on to St Mary's Girls Grammar School in Northwood, usually cycling but sometimes walking. It seemed miles away but was only 1.3 miles according to route planner. I don't remember any fellow pupils living my end of town that went to that school though.
Leisure times I would cycle all over the place. I remember a park behind the town, past the cinema and hospital with a play area one side and it lead to a more open, hilly area the other which was nearer to my school and I remember dragging a sledge all the way there one winter, probably aged about 9 or so.
Wow, a trip down memory lane after randomly coming across the website. The pictures of the high street, circa 1965 are just as I remember them, I was aged 10.
