Grew Up In Northwood

A Memory of Northwood.

I was born there in 1957 and lived there until 1975. Rhodes had those lovely handmade sweets. There was a Delicatessen next door..always had a lovely smell of roasting coffee - and fabulous wheels of Brie.. The reindeer pub always seemed like a modern pub out of place. At the top of Hallowell road was the Snooker club. I was never old enough to go in , but my dad enjoyed frequenting it. I remember the Cricket Club at the corner of the Ricky road and Ducks Hill opposite the Gate pub. They had some good conker trees. A Sainsburys with that long pork pie with egg in the middle all the way through (always wondered as a kid how they did that). Another good sweet shop opposite Soman Sports next to the barber (Steves?). And at the other end of the new block where Soman Sports was there was a music store. used to go in there for DIN plugs. And near Martins the newsagent was a traditional butcher- can't recall his name. The Bicycle shop down near the bottom of the High Street on the road near that big blue train bridge , and a tennis centre/club opposite.
Used to ride my bike all over the place, around Moor Park etc, up to Batchworth Heath. And those BIG houses / estates on the Watford road.. League of Pity Fete every year. Been a long while since I was back.. ANd the Middlesex / Hertfordshire boundary path for good walks / bike rides.
