Old St Ann's
A Memory of Nottingham.
I was born 1947 in Old St Ann's. Even though the council said they were slums I had a happy childhood. St Ann's was a community like no other, most mums went out to work, and the mum who was at home would look after us till mum came home from work. Every one of us were friends, anything needed and help was there, if a baby was born all the women would help, and of course the men were in the local wetting babys head, if you misbehaved the local bobby would clip you round your ear, If any one passed away there was always a collection from the street or road, We had no central heating and in winter in your bedroom the windows would have ice on them, but if you had a house call from your doctor, in the small fire place your mum would make up a coal fire, but after doctor had been the fire was put out. In winter when the snow off the roof melted then over night froze, there were very long icicle's hanging from the gutter.
