The Model Village

A Memory of Oakdale.

This was the year I was born, as everyone was in those days, in Tredegar. I came home with my mum and dad to our house in Commercial Buildings. Both my mum and dad were from the village where my paternal grandfather had once owned the greengrocers next to the post office and my maternal grandmother lived in Ashvale. I also had relatives in West View and Rhiwderin Syr Dafydd, where my grandfather and great aunts later resided. It was a great place to grow up with summers that seemed to go on for ever, where gangs of us had adventures exploring the ruins in Maesygarn or the old cottages by the Ivy Bush pub. Bike rides to the Cherry Tree and Penyfan pond meant you went off for hours only returning for tea, those were the days.

My grandmother Sarah Morgan lived at the end of commercial buildings next to the garage. My early childhood was punctuated by long car trips to spend my holidays there. I remember going to the Presbyterian chapel across the road with my uncle Aldwyn on the "big seat". The whitsun walk and sports on the rec. Coal being dumped on the track behind the house. Jones & Porters and Mary's caf. Happy days
Hello everyone
it's been a while since i was on the site and sadly i missed making contact with a few people from the Oakdale area.
I recently turned 73 years of age and live in hope that i may make contact from someone who remembers me or my family.
