More about this scene

A herd of contented pigs rootle opposite the post office on the green which runs alongside a two-and-a-half mile stretch of the Romans' Stane Street. Later, in AD851, this was allegedly the site of a ferocious battle between Danish invaders and a Saxon army, in which the Danes were decisively routed and destroyed. According to the chronicles of the time, the brook alongside the green ran red with blood.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My mother died in 1943,when I was still a child. It was strange, terrible time but I remember vividly standing in the peaceful churchyard at the burial. The place is dear to my heart.
