The tower, marking the eastern entrance to the High Street, dates back to 1492 and took seventeen years to complete. The delay was probably caused by lengthy financial problems. During the Civil War Royalist forces defended the bridge here by hurling rocks from the top of the tower at the Parliamentarians assembled below.
