Peckham Memories.

A Memory of Peckham.

I was born in 1934 and lived at 26, Gatonby Street until I married in 1955 so I have a vast store of memories of "old" Peckham both before, during and after the war I went to school at Oliver Goldsmiths and two things in particular stick in my mind - the first was the mobile showers that used to be erected in the playground so that we kids could have a decent wash during the war - home bathrooms were unknown - and the awful shock I experienced at the empty desk next to mine one morning which, the previous day, had been occupied my best friend only to learn that he had been killed the previous night in an air raid. When the blitz was at its peak I and my cousin who lived in the next street were evacuated from Sumner Road School to Bideford in Devon. I must stop now but will continue at a layer date.

Hi there, my dad was born in Peckham in 1930, he also attended Sumner Road School and was evacuated to Devon with his brother (Harry) and sister (Mabel).

Family name was Smith and there were 5 children in the family, 3 older Brothers Sid, Eddie, Harry, 1 younger sister Mabel then my dad Bob. Dad will be 90 this year. He left Peckham a couple of years after the war when he joined the RAF.

The family lived in Lisford St and Sumner Rd. Anyone got any pictures of those streets during the war years?
