More about this scene
Although best known for its pebbled surface, low tide exposes a fair stretch of sand on Penarth Beach. Surrounded by groups of children intently digging, a gentleman in white (centre) appears to be holding an umbrella – a shelter from the noonday sun, or perhaps insurance against inclement weather? To the right, a small vessel festooned with flags is left scuppered by the retreat of the waves.
