Mardy Corner
A Memory of Pencoed.
During the early sixties I was friendly with the daughter at the Mardy, which was the big house left of the the picture, now I believe a hotel. She knew the old couple who lived at The Court very well. They were a Mr and Mrs Evans, always known as Evans the Court, and Mrs Evans family had formerly owned the entire old house in the centre of the picture; She was very pukka, and as a young woman had been a keen horsewoman and always hunted sidesaddle. Later finding themselves unable to afford the upkeep they had to sell half the house, but chose to keep the half on the right which had been the servants quarters, because she had such happy memories of horses she could not bear to part with the stables and stable yard which was also to the right. Sadly there were no longer any horses living in them.
The white cottage on the right, Croesty, was then a farm and owned the fields where the schools were later built and the large housing estate. The famer was also the local milkman 'Doug the milk' as he was known..
