A Very Happy Childhood

A Memory of Petts Wood.

I was born and brought up 8a Transmere Road. I attended Croften Infants School and then Croften Junior School. I had previously attened a nursery school in Croften Lane, I think near the infants school. I can remember my first day at infants school, having to wear a buff coloured luggage lable on a piece of hairy string around my neck. The Head Teacher was Miss Bowes. I can remember some of my teachers, there was a Mrs Peadon I think, but the other names escape me. Croften Junior School across the road was the Big School with Mr Fisher as the head, Mrs Stribley and Mrs Court as teachers, also Mr Reeves. I joined the 1st Petts Wood Cubs with my friend Graham Beauchamp and Stephen Green and then went on into Scouts. Mr A. J. Packham (Wham) was the Group Scout Master. A real gentleman who was lovely. He gave up so much of his own time for the boys.
I worked after school at "Beamans" the Chemist almost opposite the "Embassy" Cinema. I also remember the "Golden Arrow" with its lovely Pullman carrages racing through Petts Wood Station at about 11.00am each morning. Lunch time play at Junior School saw us at the bottom of the field in summer watching the goods trains passing, often with 50 or so coal waggons clanking along.
Ahhhh happy days.

Hello Christopher, just found this site and thought I would reply 8 years on! I think we must have been the same age, I was born in April 1951. My name was Angela Day, we lived in Frankswood Avenue, and I knew Graham Beauchamp quite well, our families went to the Methodist Church. I can remember a bit about Crofton Infants, Miss Bowes the headmistress on our first day took the class down the corridor to meet our teacher and we had to pretend we were a train! I think Miss Coles was my teacher to start, later a Miss Watts. Junior headmaster was Mr Cheeseman I thought ?? My teachers there were Mrs Ecob (didn't like her and she didn't like me!) Mrs Baxter, Miss Glanville who were great, and Mrs Challis (everyone was scared of her as she was strict, but when we went in her class we realised what a great teacher she was) I certainly remember Beamans the chemist, Embassy cinema, the Golden Arrow and play time on the field in the summer. Yes they were happy days of childhood, Petts Wood was lovely then. I wouldn't like to live there now. My brother is still in Petts Wood, Town Court Crescent (the posh side!!)
I David Sim, moved from Edinburgh to Petts Wood in the 60s with my parents and resided in Ash Close. Went to St Dunstans in St John's Road then onto Ramsden Secondary School in Orpington. Was in the 2nd Petts Wood Scouts for some years. I had a circle of friends and when we left school we would meet up once a month and splash out on a Chinese meal paid for with our saved up LV's. We had many a great night in the Daylight Inn. Ok, Petts Wood was small but it had a thriving shopping area on both sides of the railway line. I resided in Woodride for awhile after my parents moved to Aberdeen. I moved to Abedeen in 1972 and worked in the oil industry. I loved the time spent in Petts Wood.
