From 1932 Until 1952 With Bits Missing!

A Memory of Petts Wood.

I was born in 1932 at 36,Priory Ave. & went to Crofton Lane School & ST Dunstans Prep, run by Mr & Major Cole. After attending various schools around the country during the war I ended up at Alleyns in Dulwich which I attended from 1943 -49. Going from Petts Wood Stn. to Herne Hill via Bromley South throughout the V1 & V2 bombing threats.MY various friends at the time were Mike Goodrich,John Astley,Alan Willis,Geoff Wagener,Derek Sole ,Lawrence Foster & many others. Are any of you still about. Do you remember Priory Wanderers FC which I started ? We played home matches on Poverest Rec. In the summer Petts Wood cricket club was where I played, with famous names such as Frank Mitchell & others. My parents left Priory Ave. in 1974. Sadly neither are still with us.
Happy memories of the Embassy cinema on saturday mornings, where Mr Hazeltine (!) was manager. Seeing the winning Hillman car in Dunstonian Garage which was owned by Mr Kemsley!! And so I could go on.I am still going at 85 so do contact me if we met long ago.

Hi John,
I was fascinated to read your post. I moved in to a house on Beaumont Road a couple of years ago, and part of the back of my garden was in the grounds of St Dunstan’s Prep School. Are you still around? And do you have any memories of the prep school and whether it had an air raid shelter on the site by chance?
Yes I am still around in my 93rd year & living in Sherborne,Dorset.I am quite sure there was NOT an Air Raid shelter on the site. I was there from 1936 to 1943.
I know Petts Wood has changed a lot but I have happy memories from 5that time.
Keep wll & regards -- John
Hi John,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. I appreciate it! I’m glad to hear that you’re well. Must be all that fresh air in the countryside. I’m sure Petts Wood has changed a lot, but it’s still very green and relatively quiet and retains a lot of its village feel. In fact, your old street is still very well kept and loved. All the best, Michelle
