Further Memories Of Potters Bar

A Memory of Potters Bar.

My name is Colin Dickins and I stumbled on this recollection by Arthur Brown and thought I would add some of my memories. While I don't recall the name we must be about the same age. I lived in Coningsby Drive and went much the same route. I also was a pupil of Mr Warren and Miss Thompson. To add to the description of Sainsbury, it had a central aisle with sections each side for the various foods like cheese or bacon and each one was a separate queue. Further along next to Oakmere Park was a derelict church with gravestones at funny angles. It was later cleaned up. Next to that was a doctors surgery.
The girls names also ring bells but I can't put faces to them. I could add more names, maybe at a later date. I believe that Oakmere School has since been demolished. Don't know why. Saw lots of films at the Ritz where my mother worked for a while. She also worked in the pub at the opposite end of Darkes Lane where she met Aker Bilk and Peter Sallis. She also worked in Beales the bakers in the high street. There was also a Boots chemist all by Sainsburys. Oakmere House has gone through several changes. In my youth, it was the library where I borrowed Dr Doolittle and 101 Dalmatians amongst others. As far as I am aware it is still some sort of restaurant at the time of writing. My mother appears to have had quite a few jobs because she was also a telephonist at the exchange.
