A Great Place To Work

A Memory of Purbrook.

I had a part-time job at this Petrol Station in 1969 when I secured a job in Canada and left England, never to permanently return. I was working full-time in Portsmouth Dockyard at the time, but this station provided much needed spare cash. My first car was an Austin A35 (1956 vintage I think) and this station provided me with free oil. Whenever we served a can of oil to a customer, we nicked the edge of the can and inverted it over another container to save the last few dregs. Those dregs kept the cars of all the station workers supplied. Between customers we were allowed to work on our own cars.
This picture also shows the sign of the Woodman Pub across the street - another favourite haunt of my fellow workers and friends (ok, me too) Len & Dorothy Worth owned the pub.
