More about this scene
This event, staged on a hot June day, marked the acquisition of the sixty acres of Colley Hill, overlooking the town, by the National Trust after a lengthy fund-raising campaign to gather the £5000 needed to purchase the land. Lord Curzon presided over the Canterbury Pilgrims' pageant; although under-rehearsed, it was considered a triumph of local effort, with five hundred costumed figures processing across the face of the down and on to the local horse-show ground where judging took place. The winning group was adjudged to be a group of pilgrims representing the period 1400-1450.
