More about this scene
General Agricola established the Roman fort here, which grew into a thriving community. In the 18th century handloom and flax weaving became important. Modern Ribchester has also developed sports facilities, such as this recreation ground, which is useful on the Annual Field Day. Social groups include the Mothers' Union, the Over 60s Club, and the Amateur Theatrical Society. Behind the line of trees stands St Wilfred's church. 'The gift of a church' was made in about 1100 through Robert de Lacy, who held the Honour of Clitheroe.
