A steep lane climbs up round the edge of the castle. This picture gives us an idea of the impressive appearance of the 12th-century keep. Richmond is one of those castles where the keep is positioned at or near the gate, which suggests that it was intended for an offensive, rather than defensive role. It also contains Scollard's Hall, built in 1080 and probably the oldest domestic building in Britain.
