Why are these different? All 300,000 photographs in The Frith Collection have been scanned, but as the photos were taken over a 110 year period on a wide range of glass & film negatives, using different photographic processes, every image has to be checked and optimised, before we make a print for a customer.

Kings Hill & Kings Hill Cottage
I was born in Rochford in 1957 and grew up in Kings Hill and Kings Hill Cottage both which were owned by my grandparents Clem and Frieda Shillan. I remember doughnuts and milkshakes at Delph house in the square. It was then owned by two of my grandmother's friends, Stella and Betty. Kings Head Folk Clubs
Two Clubs ran at The Kings Head - they were called Folkus & Folk Blues and Beyond. Later they moved to the Horse and Groom. Such guest singers were Sam Mitchell and John Martin. The room at the Kings Head was upstairs and nothing more than a large bedroom. There were no chairs, we stood or sat on the floor. It was sometimes hard to see the performers or anyone else come to that, due to the cigarette smoke. ...see more

Growing Up
My family moved to Assandune Villas in Ashingdon in 1955, I was four years old and lived there until I was eighteen. From the back of our house was nothing but fields, (sadly now a huge housing estate). I remember seeing horses plowing the field nearest to us in the late fifties, and used to play for hours around Ashingdon churchyard and the Glebe, as well as the local recreation ground. I was a cub and then scout at Ashingdon Church hall and often went camping at Belchamps in Hawkwell.

Mud And Beer
Although we lived in Ashingdon, my mum used to take me and my siblings swimming at Stambridge Mill. The Cherry Tree pub nearby was where I used to go under-age drinking before I left school. As a very young child I remember visiting Rochford Market and seeing the farm animals there. In 1972 I used to go to a folk club in the Kings Head, Rochford Square. One of my earliest jobs was in Clemments Bakery, Rochford.

All our photos are printed as optimised versions of their originals, this process can take anything from 15 minutes to several hours. This ensures that the product you get shows the true quality that Frith photos are renowned for.

Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
